Canal Boat Diaries is a great series of programmes presented by Robbie Cumming who travels 300 miles across the Midlands and northern England in his narrowboat (you can catch up with all the episodes on the BBC's iPlayer).
The episodes break down into Manchester to Liverpool ("There are engine issues and a leaky boat to fix before Robbie reaches Liverpool Docks"); Sowerby Bridge to Manchester ("Robbie runs aground on the Rochdale Canal - will he make it to Manchester?"); Marple to Huddersfield ("A fallen tree and a leaking lock pound hamper Robbie's journey across the Pennines"); Froghall to Bugsworth Basin ("A low Staffordshire canal tunnel proves a problem and Robbie helps out a stranded boater."); and finally Shardlow to Stoke-on-Trent ("Robbie tackles a propeller problem and tricky locks on the Trent and Mersey Canal"). Well worth a watch.
